Kelvedon Hatch: How it Functioned

Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker

The bunker housed a subterranean world that had to be totally self-sufficient for up to several months. No one would be allowed to leave the bunker after a nuclear attack because of the severe effects of radiation poisoning, which would either kill them immediately or produce such terrible side-effects that they could survive only a few weeks.

The bunker was designed so that the 600 government workers could live underground without seeing the light of day for several months. It therefore had to be equipped with basic necessities such as water, food and fuel, and also beds, desks and toilets.

But, it also had its own self-contained air conditioning and heating system, located in a special room deep in the bunker where air could not be contaminated with radioactivity. The bunker even had a mini hospital and sick bay in case people were unwell, as well as its own operating theatre and X-ray machine.

The bunker was all about survival for those who were lucky enough to be in it during and after a nuclear attack.
